Contrary to popular belief, blonde hair that turns green after swimming is not usually due to chlorinating products. Green hair is usually an indication of copper in the water. Test the water for copper and apply Pool Magnet Plus and Sparkle Up according to label instructions. (Use SoftSwim Stain Control and Sparkle Up in SoftSwim Pools.)
To remove the green tint from hair, rinse hair in lemon juice, or with a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water.
Where does copper come from? Copper can come from several different sources:
- It can be in the source water that you add to the pool.
- Many less expensive algicides contain copper as an algae killing ingredient (if you add too much of these algicides the result can be green hair and staining of the pool surfaces)
- Another common source of copper in a pool is from a heater. Many heaters have copper pipes in them. Copper is a soft metal and if the pH of the pool water is low (even for a short period of time) the low pH will “eat up” the copper pipes and the copper is circulated out into the pool water.
- Pennies - in a very few cases we have seen pennies as a source of copper in pool water. Many people dive for pennies. If the pennies are left in the pool over night and the pH is low, copper can be pulled into the water.
